Indie Rock research

Indie Rock was first introduced in 1980 in Canada, UK and America. Indie Rock first came from the genres of Post-punk, Alternative Rock and new wave. The genre has had a mainstream audience since late 2000 in UK and America. The lyrics of an Indie Rock song tend to be based around social life and topical issues, for example politics. They can also be quick to point out the negative aspects of society. The tempo of Indie Rock tends to be fast paced but there are occasionally exceptions. The chord structure is sometimes simple and in most songs of the Indie genre there tends to contain guitar solos during the middle part of the song. The main instruments used in an Indie Rock song would be drums and 2 guitars, Bass and electric.
Most Indie Rock bands tend to have mainly male members in the band with the ages of 18-30 year olds. The members also tend to be either British or American and from a middle-class lifestyle. As this is what is represented by the bands it means fans can interact with them better as they will have similar lifestyles to the band. The target audience for the Indie Rock genre can be either male or female and also in their teens or in their 20’s. They would probably live in a middle-class society just like the bands. The musical preferences of the audience would probably be something that happens in their everyday life and also music that is fast paced and something that may bring out a small bit of rebellion if they have had a stressful day. Most of the fans would probably be classed as “emo” and where black and other colours. Some examples of clothing that could be worn by fans are skinny jeans, skin tight t-shirts and band t-shirts. Fans would purchase Indie Rock products from Itunes, the internet or high street shops. Some products can also be purchased at concerts.
The Indie Rock genre had many characteristics that are similar to other rock genres as they tend to be fast paced, the same instruments used, bands rather than single artists, which are mainly male, and also in the music videos there tends to be both shots of the band performing and also a narrative. However the Indie Rock genre is different from other genres, such as pop, as most pop artists are single and female, instruments aren’t really used as it’s all mainly computer generated music and also music videos of the pop genre tend to be based on the artist(s) rather than a narrative.
