Good Charlotte "Hold On" music video analysis

Context
The music video I have decided to analyse is “Hold On” by Good Charlotte. Good Charlotte is an American band from Maryland, America that formed on April 1, 1996. The genre of the band is Alternative Rock. "Hold On" is the fifth and final single taken from Good Charlotte's second studio album The Young and the Hopeless. It was written in response to the people who had written to the band saying they were considering suicide. The music video features suicide survivors talking about their experiences, either through losing a loved one or remembering a time they were suicidal. The peak decision of the UK singles chart of the song was 34.
The normal conventions of a music video for the Indie genre include:
A balance of performance and narrative shots.
Performance and narrative shots are generally in different locations.
Close-ups of the artists and instruments that are featured in the track.
After watching the music video for this song, I think it definitely follows the typical conventions of music video of the genre.
Camera Shots
Throughout the music there is a variety of different shots used. The first shots in the video introduces the narrative as it shows people discussing about how they have been effected by someone close to them committing suicide. This immediately shows that the narrative of the music video will be based about committing suicide. The next effective shot is a CU of some graffiti with the words “Letting Go”. This is another sign of committing suicide, as most people kill themselves to let go of their lives. The third effective shot is a MS of a family that has been affected by someone committing suicide. At the bottom of the screen subtitles show “lost a friend, a son, a brother, a cousin”. This quote shows that one person committing suicide can affect so many people close to them. The next effective shot used is a MS of the band playing their instruments. This is effective as it shows what the whole band look like all together. It also shows what the band is wearing, which is mainly black and dark colours. This also represents that they are a rock band, as most Rock band members wear dark colours rather than light. It also shows the instruments that the members of the band are playing, which are guitars and drums, which are the typical instruments used in a Rock genre music track. The final effective shot is a Cu of the lead singer crouched down on the floor with his hand across his face. This is effective as most people when they are depressed, go into this position as they want to feel alone and just want to be by themselves.
Editing
The music video cuts to the beat as when the track goes slow, the music video shots also go at a slow pace, however when the chorus and fast bits of the track start, the music video shots get faster with the beats. As there are no solos in the music track, when the band is shown all instruments are being played by each member. There is also very little shots that are focused on one particular instrument. Most of the shots are straight cuts, however near the end of the music video, when it shows some of the people in the narrative some shots have a fade in/fade out effect.
Mis-en-scene
The location where the band is, is in a small grafited, bricked building. This location is effective as it is a possible location where people may decide to commit suicide as it is in the middle of nowhere and hardly any people will go there, so it’s a private place to be themselves. Throughout the music video the lighting is mainly dark. Also the colours of clothing in both the narrative and the band performing are very similar as they are both wearing black and dark colours. This creates the “dark” emotion of the music track.
The video may influence my decisions as I like the idea of having people talking about past experiences that they have been through about the subject of the music track.
