Context
The Music Video I have decided to Analyse is “Matters At All” by Kids in Glass Houses. They are a British Rock band from Cardiff and the genre of the band is Indie Rock. The song “Matters At All” is the second single from the second album “Dirt”. On the 29th January 2010 the single was release and has so far reached number 65 on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Rock Chart.
The normal conventions of a music video for the Indie genre include:
• A balance of performance and Narrative shots
• Performance and Narrative shots are generally in different location
• Close-ups of the artists and instruments that are featured in the track.
After watching the music video for my chosen song I noticed that it is typical of other videos from the same genre.
Camera Work
Throughout the music video there are a lot of camera shots that are mainly used.

After watching the music video for my chosen song I noticed that it is typical of other videos from the same genre.
Camera Work
Throughout the music video there are a lot of camera shots that are mainly used.
Firstly in the introduction there is a few MS of the lead singer. This is effective as it immediately introduces the audience to the person performing and suggests the genre of the band and what the song could sound like. The second shot that is effective is a close up and low-angle of a strip of photos that were dropped on the floor by one of the characters in the narrative. This introduces the narrative within the video and makes the audience think what the video could be based around. Another effective shot is a mid shot of two of the characters of the narrative (which at the beginning of the video you think is all of them, but one more in introduced towards the end). This is effective as it shows the characters and makes the narrative of the story more likely to be about them being in love and then meeting again. It also shows the facial expressions of both characters, which denote the woman is happy to see the man but the man doesn’t know how to react, which connotes a love/hate relationship. Finally there are a few mid-shots of the band performing which introduces the audience the whole band that is performing and shows how they worked together in showing the genre of their band due to what they are wearing and the instruments they are playing.
As a viewer in the beginning of the video are placed as someone who is watching two people that have lost love and are being reunited but later on in the video you are placed as someone that is seeing the same story in a different perspective as the man has found a new woman and it connotes that the woman first introduced in the video wants to be the Blond woman he is with now.
Editing
In the beginning of the music video it is very slow paced but as more instruments are introduced and the beat gets faster the clips are shown quicker. For the majority of the video the clips are the same pace apart from when the narrative is rewound to the beginning which is quick. Most of the clips are straight cut but at the beginning of the video the narrative is rewound which is then played during half of the music video, which is then rewound again and played through again from a different perspective as a new character has been introduced.
Mise-en-scene
The music video is set in two different locations. The first location is a garage-like place where the band is performing there song as if they were teenagers practicing. The second location is a street where anyone can go which suggests that in the narrative a number of people are going to meet together. There is a contrast with the lighting as during the narrative it is very light throughout apart from during the night time shots, which gives the lighting of the moon and also street lamps. However when the band are performing there are three stages of lighting. The first stage is during the introduction as there is very little lighting and you can see silhouettes of the band members. Secondly in the first beat of verse 1 a few lights are added so you can see the lead singer but not the other band members as much and then finally when the chorus starts there is bright lighting for the rest of the song where you can see all members of the band. The props used in the video are significant as he band are wearing dark and black clothing which shows that they are a rock band as rock bands tend to wear dark colours rather than light. In the narrative it suggests that it is winter time as the actors are wearing scarves, hats, etc, and also during the night shots you can see the actor’s breath as they are speaking.

This video may influence me in my production as i like the idea of how the narrative is played from two perspectives and also how it is rewound many times in the music video.
An superb analysis - well done Steph! Keep up this standard. Remember to discuss how the video might influence your production.
