Wide Eyed- Amy Can Fly lyrics

You’re so wide eyed, wide eyed
I think it's time to go
Even though I lied, I lied
I'd thought you'd wanna know
Sometimes I try, I try
But it's all so slow
You’re so wide eyed, wide eyed
I think it's time to go

You don't have to lie; it's a thought to even try
She’s probably got her eye, on a different guy
Well, Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now
Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now
Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now
Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now

Your so wide eyed, wide eyed
I think it's time to go
Even though I lied, I lied
I'd thought you'd wanna know
Sometimes I try, I try
But it's all so slow
Your so wide eyed, wide eyed
I think it's time to go

The Sun is moving on, probably in my song
Living all seems gone, you'll probably keep moving on
Well, Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now
Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now
Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now
Ma says it's not awfully cold outside
But I sure do feel pretty cold right about now

Instrumental

Wide eyed, wide eyed
I lied, I lied
I try, I try
Wide eyed, wide eyed
Wide eyed, wide eyed
I lied, I lied
I try, I try
Wide eyed

Good Charlotte "Hold On" music video analysis

Context
The music video I have decided to analyse is “Hold On” by Good Charlotte. Good Charlotte is an American band from Maryland, America that formed on April 1, 1996. The genre of the band is Alternative Rock. "Hold On" is the fifth and final single taken from Good Charlotte's second studio album The Young and the Hopeless. It was written in response to the people who had written to the band saying they were considering suicide. The music video features suicide survivors talking about their experiences, either through losing a loved one or remembering a time they were suicidal. The peak decision of the UK singles chart of the song was 34.
The normal conventions of a music video for the Indie genre include:
A balance of performance and narrative shots.
Performance and narrative shots are generally in different locations.
Close-ups of the artists and instruments that are featured in the track.
After watching the music video for this song, I think it definitely follows the typical conventions of music video of the genre.
Camera Shots
Throughout the music there is a variety of different shots used. The first shots in the video introduces the narrative as it shows people discussing about how they have been effected by someone close to them committing suicide. This immediately shows that the narrative of the music video will be based about committing suicide. The next effective shot is a CU of some graffiti with the words “Letting Go”. This is another sign of committing suicide, as most people kill themselves to let go of their lives. The third effective shot is a MS of a family that has been affected by someone committing suicide. At the bottom of the screen subtitles show “lost a friend, a son, a brother, a cousin”. This quote shows that one person committing suicide can affect so many people close to them. The next effective shot used is a MS of the band playing their instruments. This is effective as it shows what the whole band look like all together. It also shows what the band is wearing, which is mainly black and dark colours. This also represents that they are a rock band, as most Rock band members wear dark colours rather than light. It also shows the instruments that the members of the band are playing, which are guitars and drums, which are the typical instruments used in a Rock genre music track. The final effective shot is a Cu of the lead singer crouched down on the floor with his hand across his face. This is effective as most people when they are depressed, go into this position as they want to feel alone and just want to be by themselves.
Editing
The music video cuts to the beat as when the track goes slow, the music video shots also go at a slow pace, however when the chorus and fast bits of the track start, the music video shots get faster with the beats. As there are no solos in the music track, when the band is shown all instruments are being played by each member. There is also very little shots that are focused on one particular instrument. Most of the shots are straight cuts, however near the end of the music video, when it shows some of the people in the narrative some shots have a fade in/fade out effect.
Mis-en-scene
The location where the band is, is in a small grafited, bricked building. This location is effective as it is a possible location where people may decide to commit suicide as it is in the middle of nowhere and hardly any people will go there, so it’s a private place to be themselves. Throughout the music video the lighting is mainly dark. Also the colours of clothing in both the narrative and the band performing are very similar as they are both wearing black and dark colours. This creates the “dark” emotion of the music track.
The video may influence my decisions as I like the idea of having people talking about past experiences that they have been through about the subject of the music track.

The Pigeon Detectives Marketing Stategies

The pigeon Detectives is a band of the Indie Rock genre. On the band’s website there is very little information but there is four links on the bottom of the page to facebook, myspace, twitter and their shop. These links are all ways of promoting the band to fans and letting them know about products and music. If you select the shop link, it takes you to a number or products which you can purchase that promote the band, for example Albums and clothing. As the website is very simplistic it doesn’t let the audience know much about the band. However there is a video, which above reads “Hi everyone, we're recording our third album in New York, take a look!” As it says this the audience will know that if they are interested in the band’s music that they should soon look out for an album coming out soon. The use of Facebook and other social networking sites attract the target audience as most people that like the band would be aged between 14 and 30 which is also the main age group for people to use the networking sites.

Indie Rock research

Indie Rock was first introduced in 1980 in Canada, UK and America. Indie Rock first came from the genres of Post-punk, Alternative Rock and new wave. The genre has had a mainstream audience since late 2000 in UK and America. The lyrics of an Indie Rock song tend to be based around social life and topical issues, for example politics. They can also be quick to point out the negative aspects of society. The tempo of Indie Rock tends to be fast paced but there are occasionally exceptions. The chord structure is sometimes simple and in most songs of the Indie genre there tends to contain guitar solos during the middle part of the song. The main instruments used in an Indie Rock song would be drums and 2 guitars, Bass and electric.
Most Indie Rock bands tend to have mainly male members in the band with the ages of 18-30 year olds. The members also tend to be either British or American and from a middle-class lifestyle. As this is what is represented by the bands it means fans can interact with them better as they will have similar lifestyles to the band. The target audience for the Indie Rock genre can be either male or female and also in their teens or in their 20’s. They would probably live in a middle-class society just like the bands. The musical preferences of the audience would probably be something that happens in their everyday life and also music that is fast paced and something that may bring out a small bit of rebellion if they have had a stressful day. Most of the fans would probably be classed as “emo” and where black and other colours. Some examples of clothing that could be worn by fans are skinny jeans, skin tight t-shirts and band t-shirts. Fans would purchase Indie Rock products from Itunes, the internet or high street shops. Some products can also be purchased at concerts.
The Indie Rock genre had many characteristics that are similar to other rock genres as they tend to be fast paced, the same instruments used, bands rather than single artists, which are mainly male, and also in the music videos there tends to be both shots of the band performing and also a narrative. However the Indie Rock genre is different from other genres, such as pop, as most pop artists are single and female, instruments aren’t really used as it’s all mainly computer generated music and also music videos of the pop genre tend to be based on the artist(s) rather than a narrative.

Plain Whie T's- Hey There Delilah

Context

The music video I have decided to analyse is “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s. They are an American Rock band from Illinois. The genre of the band is Indie Rock. Hey There Delilah is the third single from the album “All that we needed”. The single was released on September 3rd 2007 and reached number 2 in the UK singles chart.
The normal conventions of a music video for the Indie genre include:

• A balance of performance and Narrative shots

• Performance and Narrative shots are generally in different location

• Close-ups of the artists and instruments that are featured in the track.

After watching the music video for my chosen song I noticed that it is typical of other videos from the same genre.

Camera Work

Throughout the music video there are many different shots used. The first shot that is seen introduces the narrative and suggests to the audience that the woman is running away from her lover as it shows a train pulling away from a station with her on the platform waiting for her train. Throughout the video an effect is used, so that the audience can see three screens rather than one, with the main part of the video being in the largest block.
A little while later in the music video, the three screens have changed position. The screens show a close up of the singer’s lips and the bottom two screens show the location of where the narrative is taking place. From these two screens the audience will think it is set in New York.
At 0:16 the narrative shows a woman walking up the stairs, which carries on with the idea of her running away from someone/ something in her past. Also the camera shots suggest that someone is filming her with a handheld camera as the shots are shaky. This could be the person she is trying to get away from.
At 0:30 a camera shot is shown in the top screen of a panning of the band. This shows the audience who the band are, who may be recognisable to some, and also shows what their music could be like by the way they are dressed and presenting themselves. Also on the bottom screen it shows what is happening in the narrative, which is a LS of a woman still waiting for the train. Throughout the video there are CU of the guitar used in the song and also the one main singer.

Editing

The music video is very slow and fits in with the slowness of the lyrics and music being played. This is effective as it creates emotion of the singer and the audience can then sympathise with them. The narrative in the music video is in colour but dark, which shows the setting well of New York and also gives the nightlife effect. However the band and singer are in a sepia tone which adds to the emotional effect. The main instrument illustrated in the video is acoustic guitar as the song doesn’t have many other instruments for it, as it’s an emotional song. Eventhough most of the cuts in the music video are straight cuts, the effect of three screens being used at once is good, as it keeps the audience knowing what the singer is feeling and also what is happening in the narrative.

Mis-en-scene

There are two locations in the video. The first one is where the band are, which looks to be a plain room in the house with very little furniture. The location where the narrative is set is mainly New York City which shows that the band could be American. The lighting in the video contrast with each other as the narrative is very dark to give a nightlife feel, whereas the band member shots are very light and gives the feel of it being daytime when they are performing the song.

This video may influence my introduction as I like the idea of having multi-screen as it keeps the audience up to date about what is happening in the narrative, but also keeps them interested in the band members.

Examples of digipaks

Ministry of sound. Anthems Electronic 80’s

This digipak is an eight panel example. The digipak, with three CDs in, is folded up inside the main box. The box has the Record Label Company and the track listings on, which would normally be on a plain digipak. As most of the relevant information is on the outside box, the digipak is very plain and only contains the three CD’s and also a pocket for the information book that came with the CD. The main feature on the digipak is on the back, which is the “Ministry of Sound” logo, however it is not all of the logo, just the very top. This is effective as, even though it only shows a small part of the logo, it is still recognisable to the audience of what logo it is.

The Magic Numbers. Those the Brokes

Compared to the above digipak, this example is much better, even though it is only a six-panel example. This is mainly because all of the information is on one object. When you open the digipak there is 3 panels. Firstly on the left panel is a picture of the band, which is effective as it shows to the customer what the music may be like based on what they look like and what they are wearing. The middle panel contains a booklet with lyrics to the songs featured on the album. The right panel is where the CD is situated. On the outside of the digipak, there is the Record Label logo, a track list, the album name and band and a picture of the band. There is also a picture of a warehouse based setting, which shows instruments have been left lying around. As all of the digipak is quite dark it suggests to the audience that the band is a rock band.

Examples of 2 Magazine Adverts

Gwen Steffani- Love Angel Music Baby

This Gwen Steffani magazine advert is good as it contains many of the conventions used in an advert. Firstly the picture on the advert is the same one that is on the album cover so it is very recognisable to the audience. Also the Artists name is large and stands out, which is also a main focus of the advert to the audience. Underneath the artists name is also the Album name and two selected recognisable tracks from the CD. All this information is written in the same font, which is also the one that Gwen Steffani uses in most of her music video. At the very bottom of the advert is the Record Label logo and also a website of the artist to find out more information. Finally, for people who may be interested in buying the album it shows that the album is available in stores now.

All Time Low- Put up or Shut up

This All Time Low magazine advert is good as it contains many conventions that are used in most music adverts. Firstly in large letters at the very top of the advert is the bands name and Album title. Secondly, the advertisement also has ratings of the album from Kerrang!, Rock Sound and All music. As these rating are good, it may make people want the album more as others have enjoyed it so much. At the very bottom of the Advertisement and very small is the Record Label logo, which doesn’t attract the audience to it, so they are putting all of there interest in the actual album and not other albums that the record label may have made. The advertisement also contains information about what is in the digipak e.g. A DVD showing live footage. Finally it shows to anyone interested that it is released on November 30th. Unlike the Gwen Steffani Advert, this advert doesn’t have the album cover used as a background image, meaning the audience may not know what sort pf cover to look out for, to know its the album they want off the shelf.

Amy Can Fly biography

The track we have chosen to do is “wide eyed” by Amy Can Fly.

Amy Can Fly officially started on the 12th July 2008. The genre of the band is Indie Rock. The band is originated from Melbourne, Australia. There are four band members:
Jordan Clay- Vocals/ Rhythm Guitar
Josh Milgate- Bass
James Freeman- Lead Guitar
Jacob Murphy- Drums/ Backing Vocals

When the band first started Jordan posted the songs on a myspace page where they were heard by many people including Josh from Jordan's previous band, Peace Of Mind. After finding the relevant band members and changing the band name many times they recorded some tracks for five months for their first demo album. The album went on sale just around people who the band knew and people who got a hold of them via either a friend or the internet. The album sold fairly well and the band decided to use the funds to buy a P.A. system. The tracks on the album (in order of play) are "Noticed," "So Far," "All in All," "Wide Eyed," "Izzy's Song (on and on)," "Nothing Bad," "She Can't See," "Foldbacks and Cigarettes," "Someday," "All the Same," "What Would You Do?" "Amy Can Fly (just hold her hand)," and "Wide Eyed" remix. The band is now getting ready to start performing this album live in clubs and other venues around Melbourne and the suburbs as well as some cover songs including Arctic Monkeys, INXS, The Kooks and others. They are also beginning to write and record their second album which should be out late 2009 - early 2010. They are still working on getting the band recognized and hopefully getting some merchandise soon.
The band’s target audience is probably teenagers as their songs are fast paced and of the rock genre which the majority of teenagers enjoy.

Matters At All- Kids in Glass Houses

Context

The Music Video I have decided to Analyse is “Matters At All” by Kids in Glass Houses. They are a British Rock band from Cardiff and the genre of the band is Indie Rock. The song “Matters At All” is the second single from the second album “Dirt”. On the 29th January 2010 the single was release and has so far reached number 65 on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Rock Chart.

Camera Work

Throughout the music video there are a lot of camera shots that are mainly used.
Firstly in the introduction there is a few MS of the lead singer. This is effective as it immediately introduces the audience to the person performing and suggests the genre of the band and what the song could sound like. The second shot that is effective is a close up and low-angle of a strip of photos that were dropped on the floor by one of the characters in the narrative. This introduces the narrative within the video and makes the audience think what the video could be based around. Another effective shot is a mid shot of two of the characters of the narrative (which at the beginning of the video you think is all of them, but one more in introduced towards the end). This is effective as it shows the characters and makes the narrative of the story more likely to be about them being in love and then meeting again. It also shows the facial expressions of both characters, which denote the woman is happy to see the man but the man doesn’t know how to react, which connotes a love/hate relationship. Finally there are a few mid-shots of the band performing which introduces the audience the whole band that is performing and shows how they worked together in showing the genre of their band due to what they are wearing and the instruments they are playing.
As a viewer in the beginning of the video are placed as someone who is watching two people that have lost love and are being reunited but later on in the video you are placed as someone that is seeing the same story in a different perspective as the man has found a new woman and it connotes that the woman first introduced in the video wants to be the Blond woman he is with now.

Editing

In the beginning of the music video it is very slow paced but as more instruments are introduced and the beat gets faster the clips are shown quicker. For the majority of the video the clips are the same pace apart from when the narrative is rewound to the beginning which is quick. Most of the clips are straight cut but at the beginning of the video the narrative is rewound which is then played during half of the music video, which is then rewound again and played through again from a different perspective as a new character has been introduced.

Mise-en-scene

The music video is set in two different locations. The first location is a garage-like place where the band is performing there song as if they were teenagers practicing. The second location is a street where anyone can go which suggests that in the narrative a number of people are going to meet together. There is a contrast with the lighting as during the narrative it is very light throughout apart from during the night time shots, which gives the lighting of the moon and also street lamps. However when the band are performing there are three stages of lighting. The first stage is during the introduction as there is very little lighting and you can see silhouettes of the band members. Secondly in the first beat of verse 1 a few lights are added so you can see the lead singer but not the other band members as much and then finally when the chorus starts there is bright lighting for the rest of the song where you can see all members of the band. The props used in the video are significant as he band are wearing dark and black clothing which shows that they are a rock band as rock bands tend to wear dark colours rather than light. In the narrative it suggests that it is winter time as the actors are wearing scarves, hats, etc, and also during the night shots you can see the actor’s breath as they are speaking.
This video may influence me in my production as i like the idea of how the narrative is played from two perspectives and also how it is rewound many times in the music video.
