Shot List and locations

These two pictures are scans of my lyrics with the shots and locations that we are going to have in our music video. The orange writing on the left of the lyrics are the locations we will be filiming the shots, the writing in the centre (blue) are shots that are going to be inbetween lyrics that are mainly small instrumental pieces. The pink writing on the right show the shots that are going to be during the lyrics being played.

Storyboard

This shot would be the very first shot in the music video just before the music starts. It will introduce the narrative as it shows a women looking out the window seeing her boyfriend with another man. This is effective as it’s a POV shot; it also gives the sense of secrecy as the boy doesn’t know she can see him.

This shot will happen seconds before the start of the music. This shot shows the woman’s eye after witnessing what her boyfriend is doing. As it is an ECU of an eye it introduces the “Wide Eyed” subject, this is effective as the title is interoperated into the music video. As there will be tear falling from her eye it shows that she is upset about what she has witnessed.

The next shot is after a zoom into the pupil of the eye, to suggest the band is playing inside the eye. The music will start as the band is shown. The band will be shown performing all the way through the introduction. During this part of the song there will also be number of CU of instruments and members of the band. As the beat of the song increases throughout the introduction, the light will also get brighter simultaneously. The location for these shots will be in a dark(ish) room for example a garage, with important words and pictures from the narrative in the background and in the surroundings.

This shot will be at the start of the first verse. This shot is a CU of the male in the narrative, which is also going to be the lead singer in the band. This shot will show him being upset about something which is later shown in the music video.

This shot is a MS showing what the man was looking at that made him upset, which was his ex and a friend laughing and joking while she is “eyeing up” another boy. This is effective as the narrative fits in with the lyrics of the song which are “she’s probably got her eye on a different guy”. Another reason why this is effective as it shows him seeing her with someone else with out her knowing, just like the beginning of the video but with the other member of the relationship, which also gives contrast between the two characters and shows that they have been through a similar thing as each other.

This shot shows the boy and his mum talking in his room, while he’s upset about what he has witnessed while looking at a picture of the two of them together. This shot also fits in with the lyrics of the song which are “Ma says it’s not awfully cold outside, but I do feel cold right now”. These lyrics mean that she is saying to him it’s not too cold to leave but he thinks that it is, and he doesn’t want to leave and forget her.

This shot will be a CU of the picture he is looking at of him and her together. This will be effective as it will put the audience in his shoes and show what he is looking at and will show them why he is upset so that they can emphasise with him.

The following shot will be after the camera has zoomed out of the picture and it shows that it’s one of them that are hanging around the band. The shots of the band will be showing CU of them and there instruments and well as MS of the band all together. These shots will last until the second verse.

This shot will be a CU of the hands of a clock moving round a clock at a fast pace. This will be effective as it fits in with the lyrics that are talking about time moving on, and clocks ticking also symbolise time moving on.

While the clock is ticking it will slowly morph into an eye. This will be effective as it once again shows the Wide Eyed subject. The camera will once again zoom into the eye but instead of going into the band it will show more of the narrative.

This MS shows the man singing the rest of the verse until the chorus. While he is singing the chorus he will also be walking past some of the locations that have been seen in the video so far, for example where he saw his ex with another man. The end of this shot will be him walking past a row of houses, which will introduce the next part of the narrative.

This shot shows the man walking past more houses just after putting flowers on a doorstep and ringing he bell. This shot is effective as it suggests it’s outside his ex’s house but he doesn’t want to stay just in case she throws it back in his face, which may make the situation worse for him.

The final shot will be of her reading the message after picking up the flowers on her doorstep. The shot will end after she looks down the road, where he is nowhere to be seen and she closes the front door. This shot will be effective as it leaves the music video on a cliff-hanger about what she is going to do about him. After this shot there will be a number of flashbacks of the two together, that fit with the beat of the music. The last picture will be a still of the band performing, which will show the band for one last time in the music video.

Pitch Presentation

When we showed our pitch the class we got mostly the same feedback from everyone. Most people preferred ideas 1 and 2 for the music video, si we have decided to merge the two ideas together for our final music video. The most popular thing from idea 1 that the class liked was the pictures of the narrative hanging down around the band, meaning that we will try and incude this in our final idea. The most popular thing from idea 2 was the use of the eye and the CU, which means we will use this effect in the music video. A possible suggestion we had for the eye was to shine a light in it so that the pupil changed size to add to the effect, however we went against this idea for our final piece due to health reasons as it may cause problems to the actor's eye.

Ancillary Tasks and Music Video Mood Boards

This is my mood board for my Idea 1 music video and idea 3 Ancillary Tasks. The pictures I have chosen are mainly screenshots. The top right picture is a screenshot from the music video “Mine” by Taylor Swift. This picture gave me inspiration for my music idea as I liked the look of her singing with pictures of her narrative hanging down surrounding her. The picture below that is from the music video “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson. This picture gave me inspiration as it shows the two characters arguing at the start of the video, which is a similar narrative to my chosen track. Then picture in the bottom right is from the Kelly Clarkson “Breakaway” album. I got inspiration from this picture as the main focus is the eye, which is also an idea for my digipak, also as the picture shows some hair it shows that the main narrative is based around a female. The picture next to that is a screenshot from Dido’s “White Flag”. The screenshot shows her lying on a bed looking at a picture of her ex lover, which gave me the idea of using a similar shot later on in the track for my music video. The picture above that is the album cover of “Riot” by Paramore. This album cover gave me inspiration as this album cover has Riot written all over the cover, and my digipak cover could have important words from the song all over the cover e.g. I Lied, Wide Eyed, etc. The final picture in the top right corner is another screenshot from “Tattoo” by Jordin Sparks. This gave me inspiration as it shows her “checking out” another man, which inspired me to use a similar shot to suggest the woman in my narrative has moved on from her ex.

This a mood board for idea 1 Ancillary tasks and idea 2 Music video. The picture in the top right corner is of the track list from “Pulse” by Pink Floyd. This gave me inspiration as for my digipak I could use the same technique and have the track list going round a picture of the eye in a circle. The picture below that is a screenshot from the music video “matters at all” by Kids in Glass Houses. This shot gave me inspiration as it showed me what a typical Indie location for a band is, which is a dark room, but also as the beat in the song builds up, the lights also got brighter. I like this idea as it shows that lighting is in time with the beat of the track. The picture in the bottom right corner is a screenshot from “Your love is a lie” by Simple Plan. This gave me inspiration as it shows that the man in the narrative is witnessing his girlfriend cheating on him, without her knowing, which is what the narrative of my song is based on as the characters have fallen out because he has cheated, which means I could use a similar shot to this but using the opposite genders. The picture next to that is the album cover of “Pulse”. This gave me inspiration as the picture is of an eye in CU view, which is what the music video is based around in the introduction, as for my music video we would show the band performing inside the eye. Using the eye as a picture on the cover would also mean that the album artwork will be associated with the name of the album “Wide Eyed”. The picture above that in the album cover is of “Riot” which gave my in the inspiration of using important words in the song for the background behind the eye. The final picture in the top left corner is a screenshot from “Misery Business” by Paramore, which inspired me as on the wall behind the band performing is the word Riot plastered all over it. This gave me the idea if using important words from the track and doing a similar thing with them.

This is a mood board for Idea 2 Ancillary Task and Idea 3 Music Video. The first picture in the top right corner is of an album cover by The Verve. This album gave me inspiration as it has a simple background, with just the band logo and album name, which gave me the idea of doing a similar thing with using the logo of the band as the main focus. The picture below that is a screen shot from “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s. This gave me inspiration as it uses a screen showing multiple shots, which show both the band and the narrative at the same time. I liked this idea as it meant that the audience can keep following the narrative throughout the song, but the audience can see what the band look like when they are performing at the same time. The picture next to that is of the single cover from the same track. This gave me inspiration as it shows he main part of the narrative of the track, which is a women leaving, this is a very similar narrative to my track so I could use part of my narrative from the music video as the background of my digipak. The final picture is a screenshot from “You Belong With me” by Taylor Swift. This gave me inspiration as during this music video the two characters are having a conversation with cards through their windows and the last card to be held up is of her saying I love you to him, but he has already gone and turned away from the window. This gave me the idea of using a similar effect when he is trying to say sorry, I love you on card, but she has already left.

Institutions- Music Channels

There are many institutions involved in exhibiting promos is the UK. Many of them are on TV. The music TV channels vary depending on their target audience and their interests. Some examples of music channels include kerrang!, Scuzz and 4Music.
Kerrang! Music channel is available on most platforms but some you have to subscribe for. As of 2005 all of its programme content is music videos, the majority of which users can text requests to the music channel for what they want to hear. The majority of the music that is played on this channel is of the genres metal and punk. Even though most of the programmes on the music channel are “request shows” many of them are half an hour programmes of just one/two artists being played throughout, mainly Green Day, Paramore and Good Charlotte.
Another music channel is 4Music. 4Music is mainly available in the UK but is available on some providers in the Republic of Ireland. The channel is available to watch 24 hours a day, but teleshopping is broadcast from 5:00 to 8:30 am. 4Music is now the home for music/celebrity orientated shows or comedies that were once shown on Channel 4. 4Music shows a mixture of music video shows and TV programmes. 4Music is now a home for music/celebrity orientated shows or comedies that were occasionally shown on its sister channel, channel 4. As this music channel is very orientated around celebs, it suggests that the music videos are mainly from the pop genre as most people that like pop also enjoy celebrity gossip.
Thirdly, The Box is another popular music channel, which is available in the UK and in Ireland. The channel mainly offers music videos, but other shows are broadcasted from 4Music. Also teleshopping is available late at night. The channel is well known for its use of showing singles and music videos, a while before their release date. As a lot of the programmes on this channel are based on chart countdowns, it suggests that this channel mainly plays current songs in the chart, which can be any genre.

From this research I think that the best channel that would exhibit my music video would be Kerrang!. I chose this channel as my single is a rock song and Kerrang! mainly play rock music. As this is the genre mainly played the stereotypical audience would be people that tend to wear dark colours and are part of the “emo” or “Goth” friendship groups. Most of the viewers of this channel are teenagers, which are also the target audience for my music video. The average daily reach of the music channel is 213 people and 0.4% of the TV viewers. The average weekly reach is 976 people which is 1.8% of the TV viewers. The average viewing time per person in a week is 1 minute.

Representation of Indie bands

From the four album covers I have found that are from Indie Rock bands I can see that the most popular thing to have on an album cover are pictures of the band. I can see this as all of the selected album covers apart from Glasvegas have got one or more pictures of the band. For example the future heads album cover has got the band members but there eyes have been covered with black and white diagonal stripes. The Kaiser Chiefs album cover has got all the band members at the bottom, which shows what the band are like, as they seem to be dressed in black, which is what typical rock artists tend to wear. However the magic numbers album has multiple pictures of the band, but instead of them being simple pictures they seem to be stuck onto boxes in order to make the illustration on the album cover. A second thing I can see from all the album covers apart from Glasvegas again, is that they are all simple. For example Futureheads just has the band name and the picture of the band, with a plain background, Kaiser Chiefs has the same but with the album name underneath the band name and the magic numbers has a simple back ground with the band name and pictures. These album covers have inspired me as I will probably use a picture of the band, a plain simple background and have the album name on the cover of my album.

From the two magazine adverts I have found that are from Indie Rock bands I can see many similarities between both of them. Firstly both of the magazine advertisements have used the album cover artwork as a background or image on the advert. The verve has used the album cover artwork from “love is noise” as a full background, whereas the vines have used the artwork from their album as a picture to draw the audience’s attention to the advertisement. Another similarity is that both of them show when the album is available and how it can be purchased. The verve advertisement shows that the album is out Monday, but fans can download it now if they wish, however with the vines advertisement it states clearly that both downloads and CDs are available to purchase now. Thirdly both advertisements show the album name and the band name. Both of the advertisements have showed the band name in the logo that they use and is recognised by the fans. Another similarity between the two is that both the advertisements show what is on each of the CDs. The vines clearly shows certain tracks that are on the CD that fans will recognise and may enjoy, whereas the verve’s advertisement shows the things available on CD but it is small print, so it’s not very easy to spot. The final similarity between the two advertisements is that both of them show the logo for the recording company that has published the CDs. The only notable difference between the two advertisements is that the verve advertisement shows a website at the very bottom, so if people are interested in the band they can find out more, by visiting the page mentioned. These two magazine adverts have inspired me as I will probably use the album cover artwork on the magazine advert and also use a font that stands out to show the band name, the album name, certain tracks off the album and when it is available to purchase. I will probably put the recording company at the very bottom of the advertisement as well.

From my research on Indie bands I have found out many representations of Indie bands. I have found out that most Indie bands are mainly men aged between 18 and 30. They are also white British or American. Most of the band members tend to wear stereotypical “emo” clothing, such as skinny jeans, checked shirts with ties, converse/vans shoes and plain dark hoodies.

Audience Research evaluation

After asking 11 people my questionnaire I found out some information about what people like about music that I should bear in mind when I do my final product.

From one of the questions I found out what people’s favourite genre of music was. The most popular genre was Rock. From this research I found out that most teenagers aged 17 like Rock music, so this is the target audience for my selected track and band as I mainly asked 17 year olds.

From another question I found out over half of them watched music videos. From these people I found out that mainly watch them on TV and Internet. The length of time can vary but the most popular time per week for people to watch music videos were over an hour long.

For question 7 I found out that the people I asked enjoyed a variety of music channels. The main favourite ones were 4Music, Scuzz and Kerrang! From this research I have found out that the best music channel that my music video would fit on, would be either Kerrang or scuzz and they are based around Rock music.

Later on in the questionnaire I found out that over half of the people I asked purchase music media. The most popular media they had purchased were CD’s and Downloads. The majority of people I asked spend about £0-20 per week on music products.

For question 12 I found out what most people would expect to see in a music video they were watching. The three most popular answers were the band, live performances and a narrative. From this question I have found out that I need to contain these three things in my music video so it contains what people tend to expect from a music video.

From my last two questions I found out what people expect to see on a magazine advert for an album release and also what they expect to see on an album cover.

For a magazine advert I got the following answers:

Details, reviews, logo of band, band name, effective use of colour, stylish font, release date, album artwork, few songs off album, picture of band, short description of album, ratings and price.

For the album cover I got the following answers:

Artwork, picture of band, track list, lyrics, something unusual, name of band, picture relating to album name and album name.

Mood Board

I have selected certain screenshots and pictures for my mood board for many different reasons. The first picture in the left hand corner is a picture of the band with their logo beneath. I decide to put this onto my mood board as it shows what the band look like. The picture in the top right corner is a screenshot of a shot from the music video of “matters at all” by Kids in Glass Houses. I chose to put this on my mood board as the shot shows a woman seeing the man she loves with another woman, which is what the narrative of my chosen track is about, however the opposite gender is involved. The Centre right picture is a screen shot from the music video “baby’s its cold outside”. I chose to use this picture as in my track the lyrics “it’s cold outside” is used a lot throughout, so the two songs could have the same meaning behind the lyrics. The picture in the bottom right corner is a clock with the hands moving fast. I chose to use this picture as for my music video I may use a shot of a clock moving fast to signify time moving on as a lyric in the track suggests this idea. The centre picture on the bottom row is a screenshot of “Hey, There Delilah” by Plain White T’s. I decided to use this shot as it shows the narrative and the band at the same time, which has given m inspiration for something I may do for my music video. The picture in the bottom left corner is of a screenshot from “Misery Business” by Paramore. I decided t add this picture as I like the use of having words written on the wall behind the band, which has inspired me to perhaps do the same with my music video. The final picture is an album cover from the band Kids in Glass Houses. I chose this picture as it gives an example of an album cover from the Indie genre band. From this album cover I can see it is very simple and very little information on it, which may inspire me to do the same thing for my album cover.
