Institutions- Music Channels

There are many institutions involved in exhibiting promos is the UK. Many of them are on TV. The music TV channels vary depending on their target audience and their interests. Some examples of music channels include kerrang!, Scuzz and 4Music.
Kerrang! Music channel is available on most platforms but some you have to subscribe for. As of 2005 all of its programme content is music videos, the majority of which users can text requests to the music channel for what they want to hear. The majority of the music that is played on this channel is of the genres metal and punk. Even though most of the programmes on the music channel are “request shows” many of them are half an hour programmes of just one/two artists being played throughout, mainly Green Day, Paramore and Good Charlotte.
Another music channel is 4Music. 4Music is mainly available in the UK but is available on some providers in the Republic of Ireland. The channel is available to watch 24 hours a day, but teleshopping is broadcast from 5:00 to 8:30 am. 4Music is now the home for music/celebrity orientated shows or comedies that were once shown on Channel 4. 4Music shows a mixture of music video shows and TV programmes. 4Music is now a home for music/celebrity orientated shows or comedies that were occasionally shown on its sister channel, channel 4. As this music channel is very orientated around celebs, it suggests that the music videos are mainly from the pop genre as most people that like pop also enjoy celebrity gossip.
Thirdly, The Box is another popular music channel, which is available in the UK and in Ireland. The channel mainly offers music videos, but other shows are broadcasted from 4Music. Also teleshopping is available late at night. The channel is well known for its use of showing singles and music videos, a while before their release date. As a lot of the programmes on this channel are based on chart countdowns, it suggests that this channel mainly plays current songs in the chart, which can be any genre.
From this research I think that the best channel that would exhibit my music video would be Kerrang!. I chose this channel as my single is a rock song and Kerrang! mainly play rock music. As this is the genre mainly played the stereotypical audience would be people that tend to wear dark colours and are part of the “emo” or “Goth” friendship groups. Most of the viewers of this channel are teenagers, which are also the target audience for my music video. The average daily reach of the music channel is 213 people and 0.4% of the TV viewers. The average weekly reach is 976 people which is 1.8% of the TV viewers. The average viewing time per person in a week is 1 minute.

Representation of Indie bands

From the four album covers I have found that are from Indie Rock bands I can see that the most popular thing to have on an album cover are pictures of the band. I can see this as all of the selected album covers apart from Glasvegas have got one or more pictures of the band. For example the future heads album cover has got the band members but there eyes have been covered with black and white diagonal stripes. The Kaiser Chiefs album cover has got all the band members at the bottom, which shows w
hat the band are like, as they seem to be dressed in black, which is what typical rock artists tend to wear. However t
he magic numbers album has multiple pictures of the band, but instead of them being simple pictures they seem to be stuck onto boxes in order to make the illustration on the album cover. A second thing I can see from all the album covers apart from Glasvegas again, is that they are all simple. For example Futureheads just has the band name and the picture of the band, with a plain background, Kaiser Chiefs has the same but with the album name underneath the band name and the magic numbers has a simple back ground with the band name and pictures. These album covers have inspired me as I will probably use a picture of the band, a plain simple background and have the album name on the cover of my album.
From the two magazine adverts I have found that are from Indie Rock bands I can see many similarities between both of them. Firstly both of the magazine advertisements have used the album cover artwork as a background or image on the advert. The verve has used the album
cover artwork from “love is noise” as a full background, whereas the vines have used the artwork from their album as a picture
to draw the audience’s attention to the advertisement. Another similarity is that both of them show when the album is available and how it can be purchased. The verve advertisement shows that the album is out Monday, but fans can download it now if they wish, however with the vines advertisement it states clearly that both downloads and CDs are available to purchase now. Thirdly both advertisements show the album name and the band name. Both of the advertisements have showed the band name in the logo that they use and is recognised by the fans. Another similarity between the two is that both the advertisements show what is on each of the CDs. The vines clearly shows certain tracks that are on the CD that fans will recognise and may enjoy, whereas the verve’s advertisement shows the things available on CD but it is small print, so it’s not very easy to spot. The final similarity between the two advertisements is that both of them show the logo for the recording company that has published the CDs. The only notable difference between the two advertisements is that the verve advertisement shows a website at the very bottom, so if people are interested in the band they can find out more, by visiting the page mentioned. These two magazine adverts have inspired me as I will probably use the album cover artwork on the magazine advert and also use a font that stands out to show the band name, the album name, certain tracks off the album and when it is available to purchase. I will probably put the recording company at the very bottom of the advertisement as well.
From my research on Indie bands I have found out many representations of Indie bands. I have found out that most Indie bands are mainly men aged between 18 and 30. They are also white British or American. Most of the band members tend to wear stereotypical “emo” clothing, such as skinny jeans, checked shirts with ties, converse/vans shoes and plain dark hoodies.

Audience Research evaluation
After asking 11 people my questionnaire I found out some information about what people like about music that I should bear in mind when I do my final product.
From one of the questions I found out what people’s favourite genre of music was. The most
popular genre was Rock. From this research I found out that most teenagers aged 17 like Rock music, so this is the target audience for my selected track and band as I mainly asked 17 year olds.
From my last two questions I found out what people expect to see on a magazine advert for an album release and also what they expect to see on an album cover.
For a magazine advert I got the following answers:

Details, reviews, logo of band, band name, effective use of colour, stylish font, release date, album artwork, few songs off album, picture of band, short description of album, ratings and price.
From one of the questions I found out what people’s favourite genre of music was. The most

From another question I found out over half of them watched music videos. From these people I found out that mainly watch them on TV and Internet. The length of time can vary but the most popular time per week for people to watch music videos were over an hour long.
For question 7 I found out that the people I asked enjoyed
a variety of music channels. The main favourite ones were 4Music, Scuzz and Kerrang! From this research I have found out that the best music channel that my music video would fit on, would be either Kerrang or scuzz and they are based around Rock music.
For question 7 I found out that the people I asked enjoyed

Later on in the questionnaire I found out that over half of the people I asked purchase music media. The most popular media they had purchased were CD’s and Downloads. The majority of people I asked spend about £0-20 per week on music products.
For question 12 I found out what most people would expect to see in a music video they were watching. The three most popular answers were the band, live performances and a narrative. From this question I have found out that I need to contain these three things in my music video so it contains what people tend to expect from a music video.
